Why forward-thinking councils are adopting SaaS
Porirua City Council has moved from on premise to TechnologyOne SaaS to enable new ways of working and servicing constituents, without being limited by location or time.
By making enterprise software available online via the cloud, TechnologyOne’s SaaS solution for councils simplifies IT, enabling local government authorities to be more flexible and transparent. TechnologyOne hosts the software and manages the infrastructure, saving councils money and time in IT management.
Porirua City Council’s Chief Information Officer, Steve McIntosh, said working with a forward-thinking company like TechnologyOne to transition to the cloud was exciting because it meant Council was no longer bound by outdated ways of working.
“We’ve chosen to go with TechnologyOne because we see it as a way forward for the future. It allows us flexibility with an ‘always on’ component,” Mr McIntosh said.
“We’re able to expand our minds and bash the boundaries down and actually think ‘what is possible?’ and with TechnologyOne, we’re able to fulfil some of those dreams of ours.”
General Manager of Corporate Services, Roy Baker, said it made sense to build on Council’s existing relationship with TechnologyOne to streamline operations and deliver benefits to Porirua residents.
“Our business isn’t about software, our business is about running Council and providing services to our ratepayers. We need applications and software to support that, but we’re not the experts in it so let’s leave that with the experts and you’ll probably lower costs to serve overall.”
Mr McIntosh said the improved accessibility of software would help Council transform key processes, such as its Property & Rating system, allowing staff to be more active and spend less time in a cubicle.
“Our officers will be out and about and be able to use the system online - as opposed to the current version where we come back into the office to update the system,” Mr McIntosh said.
He said Council also planned to make information more available to the community online, such as by enabling people to see how their applications or queries were progressing.
“One of the things we’re striving for is a transparency about what we do and how we do it, so that our people feel more engaged with Council. We hope that will bring a better outcome for the community overall,” he said.
